A Yard to Remember: Painting a Custom Watercolor House Portrait

watercolor house portrait

Some memories live in the house. Others live in the yard.

When a client commissioned this home portrait painting for her in-laws who recently listed their home for sale, the focus wasn’t the house itself — it was the landscaping that shaped a lifetime of memories. Three siblings grew up here, running through the yard, hiding behind the giant trees, and playing among the blooming hydrangeas. The red front door barely makes an appearance, which is perfect because, apparently, no one ever really noticed it.

"IT IS ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. You are way beyond talented and I cannot thank you enough for the perfect present."

I leaned into what made the property unforgettable. The 11x14 composition highlights the sweeping yard and layered gardens, from bright yellow and white hydrangeas up front to towering trees and a wooded backdrop. Painting it meant mixing a dizzying array of greens — olive, blue-green, pale washes, shadowed depths — to make every plant feel alive without blending into a single monotone.

The end result is a portrait of memory itself, celebrating the spaces where life was lived, laughter echoed and summer days stretched endlessly across the yard. Though the house has moved on, this watercolor keeps every cherished corner alive for the family to treasure.
