Missouri Memories Captured in a Hand-Painted House Portrait

house portrait watercolor painting

When a childhood home comes with an oak tree so massive it practically demands its own zip code, you know a painting project is going to be an adventure. This brick ranch in Missouri was commissioned by a local Bloomfield Hills, Michigan client as a gift for her parents for the holidays.

Over the years, the client had collected photos during her visits home, all the while following my work online and patiently waiting for the right time to commission this piece. Between the giant oak in front and the hundreds of tiny bricks individually painted to capture the home's character, this 11x14 watercolor house portrait took hours and hours to render.

Working from several angles, I stitched together the best view so the full house could be seen without losing the impact of that iconic tree. Charming details like the wagon wheels resting against the facade and the little bench on the porch were included, adding personality and warmth to the scene.

The result is a lovingly hand-painted heirloom keepsake highlighting these personal touches while honoring the home’s history—a little piece of the Show-Me State brought to life in watercolor.
