Watercolor of a Bloomfield Hills Colonial: Big Trees, Tiny Details

Who knew one tree could command so much attention? This 8x10 watercolor of a Bloomfield Hills, Michigan colonial proved that even the biggest front-yard superstar can coexist with a stately two-story brick house—especially when the goal is capturing every inch of a cherished home. Commissioned by a client as a surprise gift for her sister, I worked from multiple photos to capture the perfect angle: slightly diagonal, so the massive front tree didn’t block the view but still got to steal a little of the spotlight.
Behind it, a mini forest of trees and lush landscaping stretches into the background, while tiny details—ivy climbing the chimney, front-entryway windows, and delicate garden planters—add layers of charm. Even though the focus leaned toward the greenery, the house itself stands proudly, captured with the same care I bring to every hand-painted watercolor. For a recently sold home, this keepsake preserves both the property and the memories that come with it—ready to hang and admired for years to come.
