Painting a Couple’s First Date Spot: Dodo Bird Donuts in La Jolla

If your first date involves donuts by the ocean, the odds already seem pretty good.

This 5x7 watercolor was commissioned as a wedding gift, inspired by the couple’s first date at Dodo Bird Donuts in the Bird Rock neighborhood of La Jolla, California. The shop itself is full of personality, from the bright green “DODO” banner to the little sidewalk sign featuring the logo—which, at this scale, required some very patient tiny-brush energy.

The original reference photo was taken closer to sunset, but since their actual first date happened in the morning, we shifted the entire mood of the piece to brighter skies and softer daytime light to better match the memory they were trying to preserve.

I always love when commissions focus on places that might seem small to everyone else but mean everything to the people attached to them. This wasn’t about painting a famous landmark or dramatic architecture—it was about the start of something important, tucked inside a cozy neighborhood donut shop near the California coast. And honestly, a custom painting of the place where you met is a lot harder to accidentally duplicate than another wedding registry set of dishes.

To most people, it’s just a neighborhood donut shop. To this couple, it was the start of their entire relationship.
