Detroit-style pizza has an iconic look and its birthplace dates back to 1946 at the Original Buddy's Pizzeria Rendezvous in Detroit, Michigan.
The pizza's square crust is thick and crispy, the Wisconsin brick cheese has a distinct flavor and the tomato sauce is placed on top of the cheese in a signature three-striped pattern. The pizza is baked in square steel pans that were originally used by local auto manufacturers.
For pizza lovers like me, there's nothing quite like Buddy's!
"My painting is absolutely beautiful!! This is perfect!!! Looks just like the pics!!"
In recent years, the growing popularity of Detroit-style pizza has other restaurants and other states trying to copy the original. But if you're from Michigan, like my client who commissioned a watercolor painting of this local treasure, you know Buddy's sets the standard.
My client grew up in metro Detroit eating Buddy's—as all of us locals do—and later relocated to Philadelphia. During a visit home to Michigan, she searched everywhere but couldn't find the perfect picture of the beloved Buddy's to bring home to Philly. So she asked me to paint it for her!
While I've never been to this original Buddy's location on 6 Mile and Conant, I could almost taste the deliciousness while I was illustrating it. So of course I had to order from the one right near my house just as soon as I finished the painting!
