It wasn't until a few years into launching my custom painting business that—due to customer demand—I added a 16"x20" size option. For an artist accustomed to working at a small scale (5"x7", 8"x10", 11"x14"), it seemed overwhelming to begin offering such a large work of art.
It can still be a bit intimidating to paint at such a large scale, not to mention the process takes several days, sometimes weeks from start to finish. But having completed several "extra large" commissions, I'm much more comfortable with it and the end results are undeniably worth it. The level of detail I'm able to capture is just so much more.
"The painting you just did for me brought my client to tears. It was absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much!"
This particular custom portrait painting was a closing gift for a local real estate agent based in Birmingham. My realtor clients typically commission home portraits, so this was an unexpected change in subject matter. In a fall scene set amongst the trees, the realtor's client posed with a prominent tree on their property.
In the photo below, you can see the large scale of the watercolor painting in comparison to my 2-year-old daughter. Maybe because the portrait was almost as big as her or maybe it was the image itself, but Sophie was so enthralled with the piece that she insisted on posing for a photo with it.
The lady in the woods has a slight smile on her face and although I don't know exactly what she's thinking, I imagine she's simply content to be amongst the autumn trees.
