Live guest portrait painting is often thought of as entertainment reserved for luxury weddings, but nowadays it's a trendy experience to feature at all sorts of events, from elaborate fundraiser galas to intimate private parties.

I recently painted live at a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park, Michigan, where guests of all ages were eager to line up for custom watercolor portraits. My family has a personal connection to the synagogue, as it was where my oldest son went to preschool many years ago, so being there again gave us all the nostalgic feelings.

The reception was a small afternoon luncheon and I was the featured entertainment—no pressure! The family also commissioned a custom watercolor portrait of the guest of honor Ari with his dog Rocky to be displayed at my portrait painting table (pictured below).

I ended up painting through to the very end, so as a bonus we got to take home a bunch of treats from the dessert table. My kids were thrilled!

Mazel Tov, to Ari and his proud family!
